How to Eat Vegan in Japan
Thankfully we have found that we will not be completely without options. There are several ways to get around the issue of everyone thinking "no meat" means "don't put chunks of meat in our food, but meat broth is ok."
Go out to eat
Only go to vegan/vegetarian restaurants or places with an English (native) cook or owner. Places like Tadgs have a vegan friendly (yet pricey menu; and yes beer in Japan is apparently liquid gold...see those prices? kaa-ching!!). Keep in mind from what we can tell these places are far and few between and even if labeled vegan, may or may not actually cook completely vegan.Cook for yourself
Although there are rumors that you have to be careful what fruits and vegetables you eat in Japan, due to radiation issues from the recent power plant breakdown. Cooking for yourself will be a great way to stay vegan/vegetarian.Kev recently found an article of some great recipes that can all be made in your tiny Japanese rice cooker! Of course, there is no guarantee that you can find the ingredients needed in Japan (not sure how many dairy farms exist to get cheese from), but with a loving family back in your home country you may be able to have shipped in what you cannot otherwise get for a decent price in Japan.
